TMJ Treatment in Dianella

severe mouth painDid you know dentists can help treat TMJ? This common condition isn’t just painful; it can also cause extensive damage to your teeth.

If you’ve been diagnosed with temporomandibular disorder, or TMD, the first step is to discern what’s causing pain. Some patients have a problem with the actual jaw joint or the disc within the joint. Others may have arthritis or degeneration, or pain could result from chronic tension or overuse of the jaw muscles.

Our Comprehensive Approach

At Grand Promenade Dental Centre, we provide a range of options to help you get out of pain and keep your teeth in great condition. Our dentists may start by recommending a custom nightguard as a non-invasive way to minimise clenching and grinding at night and preserve your teeth.

Other patients opt for injectables to relax your jaw muscles. This is a recurring treatment we may provide every three months initially, until you’ve established a good baseline. After that, you’ll likely be able to go six months or longer between treatments.

If we’ve tried everything and you’re not responding to treatment, we can refer you to a jaw specialist to do an advanced scan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does TMJ seem to come and go at times?

Stress can affect TMD depending on what’s causing your specific case. It’s normal for symptoms to get worse when you’re going through an extra challenging season in life.

What happens if TMJ is left untreated?

If left unchecked, you may experience long-term degeneration in the jaw. It’s also common to see split and cracked teeth that need to be removed. Regular checkups are important to catch wear and tear early, before it damages your smile.

What kinds of dental problems can TMD cause?

Grinding and clenching can lead to a cracked tooth or teeth so badly worn away that people are no longer happy with their smile. You may also experience generalised symptoms like limited jaw opening, difficulty eating and chewing, face pain, or a locked jaw.
